Echoes and Traces

I am extremely excited to be curating and composing for Echoes and Traces, a major Scottish New Music event taking place in September at venues around Scotland.

Echoes and Traces is a world-premiere concert tour of eight new choral works, developed in response to a 900 year old plain-song fragment from Orkney that celebrates St Magnus: Nobilis Humilis. This text and melody is extremely special, being one of the oldest surviving examples of Scottish music.
World-renowned choral group Cappella Nova will be performing seven concerts across the length and breadth of the country. The support of Historic Environment Scotland enables the music to tour to some of Scotland’s most stunning historic venues and sites: Dunfermline Abbey, Stirling Castle, Glasgow Cathedral, Duff House and Iona Abbey, as well as concerts in Greyfriar’s Kirk in Edinburgh and St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney.
The commissioned composers includes those working within contemporary classical, folk, electronica and world-music genres, so as to best represent the wealth of compositional talent currently in Scotland: Sally Beamish, Rory Boyle, Stuart MacRae, Savourna Stevenson, Aidan O’Rourke, Ailie Robertson, Matthew Whiteside and Hanna Tuulikki.
This project will be one of the most significant cultural events in Scotland in 2016, highlighting the breadth of Scottish talent. The performance is compered by John Purser, one of Scotland’s most acclaimed cultural ambassadors, and will run for 90 minutes without an interval.
The project is supported by Creative Scotland and, the Hope Scott Trust, and Sound and Music, and is produced by Lorimer Productions in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland.
